We are extremely glad to inform all members that the RWWA Stewards panel have got the all clear to purchase and install a new safety running rail. The new Mawsafe Plastic Safety Running Rail will be installed at Ascot racecourse. The rail will be up and running for the change over to Ascot racing this season. The new rail is a great safety measure. It has great flexibility and crucial Kick Out uprights for jockey safety. We believe this is a great starting point and we hope to have this rail installed in as many tracks across WA as possible in the future.
For more information on the Mawsafe Rail click on the link below.

Danny Brereton’s future in the saddle is all but over after he underwent surgery on his lower back on Sunday for injuries suffered in a fall at Moonee Valley on Saturday.
Brereton also suffered severe concussion, broken ribs, a punctured lung and a hairline fracture in his neck after his mount Marquee Player fell at the 450 metres and rolled over the top of him on Saturday.
Australian Jockeys Association executive Des O’Keeffe said Brereton was transferred on Saturday night from Royal Melbourne Hospital to the Austin Hospital which specialises in spinal injuries.
It was reported on Sunday that the 45-year-old jockey was struggling to regain full movement in his limbs.
O’Keefe said surgeons were making no predictions as Brereton’s condition could change daily
Brerteon is expected to remain in intensive care for at least a week.
Brereton lost consciousness for about five minutes after the fall and was atteneded by paramedics for 20 minutes on the track before he could be placed in an ambulance.

This week Perth hosted the Australian Jockeys Association annual general meeting. The meeting was a great success with Directors of the AJA from all over the country in attendance. What the AJA has been able to achieve as a national body in recent years has been outstanding. The future is looking good for Jockeys around the country with the AJA planning new campaigns for the new season. We are more than confident that we will be able to achieve a lot this year with the AJA under the management of a fantastic group of passionate Directors. We are sure all Jockeys across the country are extremely grateful to the AJA for all the time and effort they put into looking after Jockeys best interests.

Leading heavy weight rider John Claite has announced his retirement this week. The decision was made due to John’s ongoing struggle with injury and battle to keep his weight under control.
John’s fierce competitiveness throughout his career has seen him string together a hatful of feature wins. The biggest of these wins coming in the 2003 Perth Cup aboard Tumeric.
John has been an integral member of the WAJA committee and we will be sad to see him go. John has always made himself available to his fellow riders as well as being a great mentor to the Apprentice riders coming through the ranks.
We would like thank John for all the time and effort he has put into the Western Australian Jockeys Association and the Racing industry as a hole.
All of John’s fellow riders would like wish him all the best for the future and we hope to continue seeing him at the races in the future.
